“A lady is one who never shows her underwear unintentionally” By Lillian Day

What You Wear is Who You Are!
By R. White

What does Elizabeth Taylor and Lingerie have in common? The better question is what does she have in common with the brassiere?

Shopping for a brassiere is a source of unbelievable angst for the female gendered species. It takes time, patience and often times, trial and error to find the perfect match. You will go through many bras until you find that one that provides the proper lift, shape, the ability to create cleavage (for those like me who are cleavage challenged) and free from the feeling of bondage.

And like Ms. Taylor, you may never find that perfect bosom buddy!

Sorry, Elizabeth, I didn’t mean to rag on you. I just remember the very sizzling image of your in a lacy slip in the 1960s movie, Butterfield 8 and thought how lovely you looked standing at the doorway, holding a glass and thinking to myself, how could she not be able to have found the perfect mate. And that’s when I got the idea to express the difficulty in finding the perfect Lingerie. It’s not as easy as it seems. More on this later.

Speaking of bosom touching buddies and underwear.

Calvin Klein. Mark Walberg (Marky Mark at the time). Kate Moss. In 1993, all three created a sensation when the billboards went up in Time Square featuring Marky Mark and the topless Ms. Moss in nothing but their Calvin Klein underwear. I wonder why they never hooked up. Wait! Did they? I mean those ads were like, whoa!

Is it me, but it seems like if you can model underwear, this opportunity can launch you and your career into the cosmos never to be seen as the same person, again.

I remember when these ads went up when the outrage over the explicit, in your face, ads selling sex, put Calvin Klein under the constant glare of critics. And of course, this was way before the Abercrombie & Fitch catalogs.

Calvin Klein helped launch many careers with his CK ads for fragrance, jeans and underwear.
Of the most controversial of ads, it was CKs Obsession dripping in nudity and sexuality. Then came Escape with a more tamed message of “intense love” and with much less sexuality than Obsession.

Anyhow back to Mark Wahlberg.

Okay. So, like Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch had that one slammin’ track, “Good Vibrations released in 1991. And even though there were a “Bunch” of dudes behind him in the video, Mark Wahlberg’s career eventually launched him into the Hollywood Actor Arena and left the funky “Bunch” behind.

Now, I’m not sure this was due to the music career, the underwear modeling or both, but Mr. Wahlberg became a serious actor and he is considered on the same level as my favorite actor, Matt Damon. Man, they were great in “The Departed.”

Wow that felt like to the section for My Random Skivious Style thoughts, but what ever.

Moving along…..

Skivious Style Blog will breakdown each day’s blog with:

* A Skivious Style definition and/or word of the day that is fashion related.
* Some Skivious Style comment about a celebrity.
* Provide Skivious Stele information about trends and/or news.
* My random Skivious Style thoughts and advice about, what else, Style.
* And a Skivious Style suggested purchase.

And always have a sense of Style and Grace about yourself!

Skivious Style Definition and/or Word of the Day:
Bourgeoisie - is a French word that was borrowed directly into the English. In the pre-revolution French society, “bourgeois" was a class of wealthier citizens who were members of the Third Estate (The Third Estate included all those who were not members of the aristocracy or the clergy, including working folk peasants and the bourgeoisie).

In 1789, the Third Estate comprised of 97% of the population in France, but were overtaxed and had none of the privileges which the aristocracy held. However, many bourgeoisies bought their way into nobility.

Bourgeoisie - is a also used to classify and analyze human societies to describe a social class of people who are either in the upper class or merchant class and where their power derives from their form of employment, education and wealth.

In a capitalist society, the term often refers to the owning and ruling classes. The term is used in many non-English speaking countries as a way to define the middle class. In its common usage, bourgeoisie has a “pejorative” connotation suggestive of an undeserved wealth or lifestyle that lacks sophistication commonly found in the rich and wealthy.

Basically, this is just another fancy word for snob!

Is Bill Gates, Nouveau riche? (French for new money). Nouveau refers to an individual who acquires wealth within their generation; as opposed to old money where the families have amassed their wealth through multiple generations.

I personally don’t come from Aristocracy (old money), a “Bourgeois” (wealth class) or Nouveau riche (new money). But I do know whether you are from the upper, middle, lower class of anything, What You Wear is Who You Are! So make sure you keep that word “class” in your wardrobe.

That was long. Sorry! But it will make sense later.

Skivious Style Comment on a Celebrity:
Kimora Lee Simmons is a mother, a model and a mogul. Her words. Oh, she also has a chef. But having all that she has, does she possess a true sense of fashion and more importantly, Style? What category, since we all need to put folks in categories) does Kimora Lee Simmons belong to? Would you consider her, Bourgeois? Does she come across like a, well, snob?

She lives on a vast estate, mired in opulence in New Jersey. Her home is featured in some of her ads and displays of materialism are replete throughout every carefully designed and photographed pictorial.

Like Jessica Simpson and Madonna (remember her), these women epitomize the true meaning of seizing the moment. They have been able to recognize when and how to capitalize on that one moment in time when the “populace” put them on the front page of something because of something they did or some circumstance that found themselves in.

This was never more evident than in the case of Jessica Simpson. Her camp, I believe, could not and did not realize just how popular Jess would become based on one simple (albeit ignorant) comment about a food product. That, more than her albums and fabulously toned body did more for her career. And like Marky Mark, she has never looked back.

Her ads suggest that Kimora Lee has Style coming out of her flawless pores. I have to hand it to the girl, she is very clever! Like a lot of women in the 21st century, they’re able to recognize an opportunity when is presents itself, write a business plan whether on a napkin in lipstick at the club or while taking notes in a business class in college, they start planning their futures in the form of a marketing strategy and begin building their “business.”

That’s how you have to do it, though.

It’s all about business and it is my business to make sure you look incredible doing it.

Skivious Style Trends and/or News:
Guess who’s designing for Target? Did you say, Isaac Mizrahi? Goodness grief. We have Vera Wang for Kohl’s and Todd Oldham for Old Navy. What the ……!

With regard to Mr. Mizrahi, great designer by the way apparently has a great fall 2007 line up for Target customers. The must have classic white shirt I suggested in my first blog and the little black must have dress I also suggested, are features of Isaac Mizrahi Target collection.

Apparently, and according the Target news release, ‘The Isaac Mizrahi for Target collection continues to provide smart, fashion-forward pieces that appeal to women of all ages," says Trish Adams, senior vice president, Target. "Isaac’s style insight and sense of wearability result in a chic collection sure to delight our guests.” ‘

Isaac Mizrahi’s, one of the most successful a prolific designers makes a movie where he is preparing his 1994 fall collection in the 1995 movie, Unzipped. This movie was my first real look into the world of super thin models and live wire designers come together to build a collection of clothes for the world to see.

And now, Mr. Mizrahi is designing clothes for the true masses and I will definitely take a look the next time I’m at Target to buy laundry detergent.

My Random Skivious Style Thoughts:
I’m bringing it back to the subject of underwear again. And to be a total prude about it, lets call our undergarments, lingerie.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen this on many women when I’m walking behind them. Wait a minute! Don’t get it twisted (so to speak). I’m only looking because it is something that I cannot believe I am witnessing. This is the bunching of her underwear where you can see the them spilling outside the pants.

First of all, you can’t feel that? And stay away from highlighter colors like yellow, lime green, fuchsia and purple. Ugh!

I will spend a moment here providing you with some helpful tips on how to eradicate that ever present panty line and present you with an idea that will surely make you feel unencumbered in the evil undergarment.

For starters, you need to wear panties that fit. They should be close to the body but not tight and the waist band should be snug not all bunched up.

Quick note, when trying on panties (if you must) pay attention to the Gusset (crotch). Make sure the manufacturer inserted a protective plastic shield for hygienic purposes.

* Bikini - waistband rests just below the navel and the hips
* Boy-leg Brief - waistband sits low on the hips. Back coverage is full and these are great
to wear under your short skirts and low slung slacks.
* Briefs - the waistband rests at or just below your naval and the back coverage, too, is
full. (aka French cut and high-cut).
* Control Brief - a brief with added support to flatten the tummy or derriere.
* French Cut - high-cut legs on a brief. (I do not like these).
* G-String - designed strictly to prevent those awful panty lines. This panty has no back
coverage what so ever. The waist band and back have thin strips of fabric.
* Tap Panty - short shorts with a delicate and slight flare at the hem (love these, so
feminine).
* The Thong (haay!)- These leave the buttocks exposed in order to keep from having to have others view your panty line. They do offer a bit more coverage in the front
than the G-String.
* Thong boy - is a cross between a boy brief and a thong. There is less coverage than the
boy brief allowing for just a little check to sneak a peak.

And since I’m on the subject of underwear, obviously I thought it wise to make this my suggested purchase for this blog.

Skivious Style Suggested Purchase:
If you’re looking for nice, sexy and feminine lingerie, I recommend: in a bra and panty ensemble -

* Kajn’s Vintage Pretty in Lace. Click here for image: http://www.shoppewithkajn.com/fs1939.htm

So, I'm a Style Snob. And!

Skivious Style
What You Wear is Who You Are!
By R. White

Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy all had “it. “ And “it” is Style. These women had the 3Gs: Glamour, Grace sprinkled with a little Glitz. They all possessed the kind of style you do not see today in Hollywood or anywhere else for that matter.

Here it comes, my snobby remark about Hollywood of today. What is the deal with some of the younger actresses? Where are they buying their clothes? Many of the actresses are dressing like bag ladies. That is not cool! The homeless, hobo, bum, Raggedy Ann look, is ridiculous, and makes no sense to look this way. If your sole purpose for getting out of bed with the intent to purposefully walk out the house in what looks like you're wearing shredded fabric, stay in the house or better yet, stay in the bed with all those sheets and go back to sleep.

When I watch the Academy Awards, Emmy Awards, Grammy’s or the Golden Globes, I expect to see some terrific fashions. Actually, in all honesty, I’m just looking for a reason to clown. But I do wait for the one actress or actor (can't leave them out) who just oozes Style. And like waiting for your boyfriend or husband to just do things for you without you having to gingerly mention or straight up ask him, it never happens.

Am I being too hard on the designers? Too harsh on our overly compensated, inflated salary driven thespian friends? Am I looking for something that is so like yesteryear that I need to check myself? Is glamour gone and never to be experienced again?

For me, the last time I witnessed anything close to representing the appearance of old Hollywood was at the 75th Annual Academy Awards in 2003 when Jennifer Lopez attempted to create that glamorous Hollywood image in a 1960’s inspired Neoclassical Silk Crepe Valentino gown.

She looked amazing and not much was mentioned about the dress. The story behind that dress is interesting, though. Apparently, Jennifer loved the dress from the archives and desperately wanted to purchase it, but was told she could not buy the dress because it had been made for Jackie Kennedy in the 1960s and it was not for sale. "Some people have a vision of themselves as less glamorous or more sexy," she said. "I just fell in love with this dress…” . So I said: "Lend it to me for the Oscars, I have to have it.”

I personally appreciate her effort to bring glamour back

When I think of fashion and Style, certain colors come to mind, like pearly white, mysterious black, metallic grey, soft pink and even brick red. Certain styles come to mind as well, like 3-inch Pumps, the straight skirt, headscarves, pearls, a pillbox hat and Coco Chanel.

And because these things (call me crazy) matter to me, will be a constant theme, one way or another, in my Skivious Style blogs.

So to begin my Skivious Style diatribe......

And of course, Skivious Style will breakdown each day’s blog with:

* A Skivious Style definition and/or word of the day that is fashion related.
* Some Skivious Style comment about a celebrity.
* Provide Skivious Style information about trends and/or news.
* My random Skivious Style thoughts and advice about, what else, Style.
* An a Skivious Style suggested purchase.

And always have a sense of Style and Grace about yourself!

Skivious Style Definition and/or Word of the Day:
Haute couture - is French for “high sewing” or “high dressmaking” and refers to the exclusivity of custom fitted fashions. Today, haute couture is a name that is protected, that is only allowed to be used by firms that meet certain standards that are clearly defined.

Haute couture is made to order for a specific client, and the garment(s) is/are usually made from high quality and expensive fabric and sewn (often by hand) with special attention to detail.
Just in case there is some confusion, the term haute couture is continually misused and therefore its meaning water downed by blurring it with prêt-à-porter the French term for ready-to-wear, in the public’s eye.

Every haute couture house markets a prêt-à-porter collection. For the record, most of the haute couture garments displayed at fashion shows from Milan to Paris to London to Tokyo to New York, are rarely sold. The designs are often derived from the wild imaginations of the designers and created to enhance the “prestige of the house” and to get the buzz about the designer at the fashion shows so that you and I will purchase the ready-to-wear fashions.

So remember, the next time you read a fashion magazine and comment on the silliness of the runway fashions during fashion week, just think to yourself, this is a show, hence fashion show, designed to get attention and make people talk about the ridiculousness of what you saw on the runway.

My personal favorite was this totally out of the hemisphere fashion piece at the Colosseum in Rome, Italy in July ‘07 as Valentino celebrated his 45 years as a couturier. In a word, “Wow!” It was this pink (great color by the way) three tier slinky (the toy) type coat number that reminded me of paper Mache. Actually, I think I like it, because I keep searching the internet for an image; to no avail.

Skivious Style Comment on a Celebrity:
Since I somewhat already hinted on raggedy looking clothes worn by celebrities, I think I’ll stay on this subject just a little bit longer.

OMG! Mary-Kate! We all need a sense of individuality and a desire for independence. But, for real, girl. Why do you insist on hanging sheets of fabric around your petite frame? We can’t see you! I understand that you find this cute and want to separate yourself from sis. Do you even remember when little girls looked up to you and your sister? You used to wear the cutest outfits. Albeit it was during the mid 1990s (terrible fashion) time, but at least you were adorable.

In the October 2007 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Mary-Kate is featured in an editorial where the photos are absolutely smashing. Her hair, first, looks great and the eye make-up is bold and beautiful, bringing out the true essence of her bright eyes.

In the Harper’s Bazaar interview with Mary-Kate, she states, “…I just dress the way I feel instead of looking for what’s the new handbag.” This is precisely the problem. Why do you feel like Raggedy Ann? Mary-Kate also mentions, “I run around my house naked with heels all the time. It’s so funny. All of my friends will tell you I love running around in kimonos and jewelry or naked with jewelry. “ REALLY?! I mean I see the kimono urge, but naked with heels? Hum!

I’m just saying, for those of you who have this propensity, like Mary-Kate and sometimes Nicole Richie, to dress like you always shop at thrift stores when you have millions of dollars, if you don’t want to allocate some of your discretionary income for nice clothes, please send me a check every month so I can go to Barneys New York - http://www.barneys.com/.

Skivious Style Trends and/or News:
There’s something about fabric that had designers, Yves St. Laurent, Prada, Carolina Herrera, John Galliano, Giles, Givenchy, Nina Ricci, Rodarte and Proenza Schouler this fall season creating pieces that folded like the bellows of an accordion on pleats, gathered Chiffon reminiscent of Art Deco (a popular and opulent design movement from 1920 until the late 1930s), origami like inspired fashions, and bows and ribbons, according to Style.com editor Laird Borrilli-Persson.

It looks like layers of fabric is the trend and you can find these trendy origami inspired fashions by Rebecca Taylor’s Chiffon top for $244.00 at: http://www.rebeccataylor.com/. And for the pleat lovin' individual, a Grey pleated trousers by Oscar de la Renta are featured at: http://www.instyle.com/.

My Random Skivious Style Thoughts:
Yep. Gotta go here too. That ever present nagging and irritaing issue about how to dress for your body type. This is a very important element to having Style. I recommend you pay close attention to this portion of the blog, because this is where it all begins, with Style.

Knowing your body and knowing it well will dictate what you buy, where you buy it, how much you spend and how you will look in it.

The focus here will be on the dress and skirt. Quick snobby note first. If your dress or skirt hangs lower in the front than the back, re-evaluate that garment. I mean it! This is not a flattering visual.

For big thighs and hips - the best way to balance a bottom heavy figure is to make sure you choose the dress and skirt that ever so slightly skims over the lower half of your body. Go with Empire waist styles that are form fitting around the bust and has a slight flare. Avoid dresses/skirts that that gather or cinch at the waistline or any detail that is near the waist, hips or derriere.

An example of the type of dress you should wear is a Vince Stretch Satin Pleated Chemise or a Vince Tie Dress found at: http://www.bloomingdales.com/.

Plus Size - I recommend a Donna Ricco Halter Dress (Plus) for $168.00 found at http://shop.nordstrom.com/. or Click here for an image: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2925783?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=keywordsearch&keyword=donna+ricco+halter+dress+in+All+Categories&origin=searchresults

Or an an Abby Z New Jersey Dress that is sexy and forgiving for $48.00 visit http://www.alight.com/. or Click her for an image: http://www.alight.com/11990207.html

Unattractive Legs - if you only wear pants because you dislike your legs, try wearing long dresses or skirts (mid-calf or longer) - a very sexy Donna Ricco Print Silk Chiffon Maxi Dress in Mandarin/Champagne for $178.00 found at: http://shop.nordstrom.com/
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2927123?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=keywordsearch&keyword=donna+rico+in+All+Categories&origin=searchresults. This dress will make you look so very good, especially if you get invited to a party where they're serving, Veuve Cliequot Ponsardin Champagne (sparkling wine) and fancy little sandwiches with cheese and give away party favors like a box of Voluspa Basic Black Votive Scented Assorted Candles and little tubes of Clinique moisturizer.

Hopefully, these flattering style dresses will bring you to buy more dresses that will bring out the sexy in you. Embrace your femininity!

As I promised, here are some more basic must haves in your closet:

1. That Little Black Dress - has been a staple in womens closets dating back to the 1920's when Coco Chanel who is credited for having created the first one. The black dress can be worn with Stilettos, 2 inch high slingbacks or flats. You can accessorize with pearls, a scarf or nothing at all. The little black dress stands alone and if it fits well, you almost don’t have to add a thing to it.

2. Basic Black Trousers - like a relationship you’re way too comfortable with, we often take black pants for granted. You can wear them on any occasion. A well-fitted pair will accentuate your nice curves and always hide unattractive legs ( as mentioned above when it comes to dresses). Pants that are tailored will rest on your hips, thighs and derriere very nicely.
Here’s an idea for those of you who really do not know how to match your shoes with your pants:

Straight leg pants -please wear high heels or stilettos for the right balance. This allows your legs to look long and lean.

Wide leg pants - avoid heels that are too high. A medium heel will suffice. Please make sure your pants don’t fall over the shoe and hit the floor. Tacky, tacky, tacky!

Cropped pants - no high heels or ankle strapped shoes, okay! Ballet style slipper shoes or a mule style shoe work wonderfully with mid-calf or ankle length cropped pants.

I personally have a pair of Gap mid-calf Khaki cropped pants (purchased five years ago, like my dog on Gap boot cut jeans), that I only wear with my Arturo Chiang beige Tulip mules.

3. A Leather Tote Bag - During the fall and winter seasons, bags get bigger because there is typically more to carry (i.e., umbrellas, gloves, hats, etc.). My personal favorite big leather tote is of the patent leather variety.

This bag looks great with my black patent leather Nine West Pumps and goes with almost everything hanging in my lovely walk in closet. If you want to totally look like the lady you are, a rectangular shape is the most flattering. However, like trying on a pair of shoes, try your handbag on, as well. Stand in front of a full-length mirror and make sure it is proportioned to our body. You do not want to walk around with this big o’ handbag that dwarfs you and you don’t want to carry this itty-bitty handbag where your body overwhelms and dwarfs the handbag.

Plus, there is no reason what so ever to carry a small handbag if you’re like me and have my cell phone, make up bag, magazines, often an extra pair of shoes, napkins, sometimes a coffee mug and odds and ends like, glue, Tide stain sticks, a small sewing kit, disinfectant wipes and hair clips. Leather totes are trend resistant and will never fail you season to season. Make sure you purchase a quality leather tote. After all, this is the sidekick that is ole faithful, is attached to your side and allows you to bring it along with you when necessary.

And finally….

A Skivious Style Suggested Purchase:
Since I started talking about glamour, grace, old Hollywood and the mention of the classic little black dress in addition to what I believe allows you to ooze class yet showcase a tiny bit of sex appeal, I want to bring the topic of dresses back up and make a suggested purchase. I almost don’t want to recommend this dress because I’m probably going to buy it myself, but if I want to be true and real and suggest something I believe is gorgeous.

It’s the Donna Ricco Silk Blouson Sleeve Charmeuse Wrap Dress for $158.00 and found at http://shop.nordstrom.com/. Click here for image: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2961055?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=keywordsearch&keyword=donna+ricco+in+All+Categories&origin=searchresults

This dress is absolutely one of the nicest dresses I seen for me in a long time. And I have the perfect slingbacks to wear with it. Yeah, I so like this. When's payday?

What does Elizabeth Taylor (one of my favorite actresses) and Lingerie have in common? Skivious Style’s next blog will reveal.

What You Wear is Who You Are!

Skivious Style
What You Wear is Who You Are!
By R. White

I should first begin by saying, seriously, what you wear is who you are! And yes, I know, fashion changes, but Style doesn't. You either have it or you don't. It's strictly up to you to decide if you want Style or not. I recommend you do, though.

I watch what people wear, how they wear it and most importantly, I try to determine why they wear it. All too often, my eyes hurt when I walk down the street in a downtown area, witness the all too often travesties exhibited by co-workers, even at the mall or a trendy shopping center, I see individuals committing the most horrendous senses of Style.

Call me a Style snob, that’s okay. At least you will never be able to say, my handbag doesn’t match my boots or shoes! Never! And this is what I truly do not understand. When you commit this Style error, it is a fashion faux pas. And you are probably saying, “who cares?” My eye’s care. And if you want to have a sense of style, stop doing this, please!

According to the editor’s of In Style magazine, “…the notion that to be in style is to express yourself, to live with imagination, ease and confidence. And nowhere is that more true-and sometimes more difficult-than in the choices you make in dressing yourself.”

My goal is to provide you with a Skivious Style education and to assist you, everyday, plan a wardrobe that first, flatters your figure with clothes that fit your body type and fulfill your desire to look and feel good.

Skivious Style Blogger will breakdown each day’s blog with:

* A Skivious Style definition and/or word of the day that is fashion related.
* Some Skivious Style comment about a celebrity.
* Provide Skivious Style information about trends and/or news.
* My random Skivious Style thoughts and advice about, what else, Style.
* And a Skivious Style suggested purchase.

And always have a sense of Style and Grace about yourself!

Skivious Style Definition:
Trend - the process of getting others to follow or copy of their own free will your actions and/or style.

This action, I believe, is the most flattering compliment one can receive. Obviously, if someone copies your sense of Style, they’re telling you that, not only do, they think you have Style but that they want to look like you.

Remember when you were a kid and someone had the nerve to utter the word, “copy cat?”
To me, again, this is a flattering comment especially when it comes to emulating someone else’s sense of Style.

Right now, here is a trend for you, in a word, Quilt. This fall, designers are creating some fabulous fashions with quilt. The fashion classic quilted item the Chanel handbag with the gold chain evokes a sense of allure and sophistication. When you walk into some trendy restaurants, you might find black benches made of leather with a quilt pattern.

This is designed to give you that sense of comfort and charm. Me, it invokes the imagery of a luxury cruise liner. And if you’re aware of what was on the runway this season, you noticed our puffy little friendly style.

I’m so feeling the Hunting Season’s leather handbag and Alexander McQueen’s Dries Van Noten’s nylon skirt. Does that come in a size 2?

Skivious Style Comment on a Celebrity:
Yeah, Britney Spears Sequined bikini ensemble at the VMAs. I am fighting the urge to discuss this. Therefore, I will resist. By the way who designed the bikini? But enough has been said about the outfit that was highly recommended she not wear. So, I will leave that alone and discuss Angelina Jolie’s ST. JOHN editorials found in almost every major fashion magazine.

My personal favorite fashion bible, if you will, is W. And there is a pictorial of Ms. Jolie that truly defines class. Angelina is so versatile not only as an actress but in her sense of Style. She pulls just about anything off. My belief is that Angelina wears the clothes not the clothes wear Angelina. ST. JOHN, the luxury apparel label, made a marvelous choice, during a marketing strategy session, when the creative team decided that Angelina Jolie would most perfectly represent their vision in their ads.

Angelina has the perfect face and angles for these ads and she brings a sense of mystery which the photographer Mario Testino captures so beautifully in every garment worn bt Ms Jolie in the ads. The next time you see a ST. JOHN ad with Angelina Jolie, tell me what you see.

Oh, I just have to comment on the Emmy Awards. Typically, I would limit my Skivious Style celebrity comment to just one celebrity at a time, but, OMG. Valentino, you did it again baby; especially with Christina Aguilera.

The white satin Empire waist gown with a black velvet bow was absolutely breath taking. Christina Aguilera reminds of me of 1950s Hollywood when the actresses were the epitome of sophistication, grace and style and wore the fashions with such ease.

Effortless is the way I describe the way Christina Aguilera looked in all the gowns she wore that evening. From her Steppin' Out With My Baby duet performed with Tony Bennett wearing a gorgeous magenta gown to her backstage Emerald gown, Christina Aguilera is Style.

Skivious Style Trends and/or News:
Designer Todd Oldham starts his new job Monday, October 1, 2007 as the new and badly needed creative director for Old Navy. Gap, Inc., did the right thing this time.

President of the Old Navy division, Dawn Robertson "‘called the pairing,’" “a huge win for both of us.” Yes, let’s hope so for Todd Oldham’s sake.

The 45 year old, Texas born Oldham has had a very successful career as a celebrity designer. Todd an innovative thinker with his offbeat fashion sense yet ability to appear to a broad audience, should bring more customers to Old Navy. Not sure, though, if I’ll be one of them. I have yet to ever make a purchase at Old Navy.

This is partly due to the fact that I often compare them to their parent division, The Gap. I’ve shopped at the Gap for years. Well, let me back track. I stopped about 5 years ago, when suddenly I could not find a decent pair of size 2, ankle length, Khakis. And the jeans. All I want is a pair of Gap, Slim Fit Boot Cut, size 2, jeans. The last pair I purchased was like I mentioned, five years ago. I still have them, I just can’t wear them in public anymore. So, I’m hopeful that Mr. Oldham’s creative flare will spill over into the Gap.

My random Skivious Style thoughts:
Actually, this isn’t random because as I was commenting on Todd Oldham’s new gig at Old Navy and the rambling of how the Gap used to be, I started thinking about jeans and pants in general.

As we all know (if you don’t, you should) - jeans epitomize American Style. The reason is because jeans represent the personality of the wearer. When you put on your jeans, you’re saying something about yourself. That’s why you should wear jeans that best show off your figure.

Please, if your thighs happen to rub together, make sure your jeans do not pucker at the inseam. If they do, wear a long blouse to cover the pucker.

My figure, often, does not allow me to just walk into a Gap, Banana Republic, an Ann Taylor, Nordstrom or H&M and be able to find the perfect fitting jeans.

So for someone like me, curvy below, I look for jeans that fit my hips and derriere but often have to have them tailored at the waist. This assures a great fit for me. And because I’m only 5‘0“ tall and I refuse to allow the jeans to overwhelm my small frame. The jeans I purchase are often long and worn with boots or heels. This elongates my frame.

And if you are the same measurements as me, please for goodness sake, stay away from wide-leg or flared jeans - they make you look shorter than you already are.

Another thing, I want to share with you. If you haven’t done this or this doesn’t apply to you for some strange reason, make sure at some point in your life time that you’ll have put forth the effort to make sure you have all the basic must have’s of a wardrobe in your closet.

Below are 5 of the basics to start with:

1. Knee High Boots - with a mid-size heel (especially a brown pair) to wear with your fabulously fitted jeans or any length skirt or dress. But you can start with a great black pair like Via Spiga’s Fall 2007 Collection - an architecturally, sleek and sexy boot. Pure Italian inspired and I can’t wait to buy my pair at: http://www.viaspiga.com/.

2. A Basic, Crisp, Long-Sleeved, White Shirt - this simple item is a staple in building a basic wardrobe must have, especially for the fall. Any variety of a long sleeve white shirt will do. From varied collars and cuffs, to those with a one chest pocket or two, fitted or stretch, all work well with any pair of wide-leg trousers, any length skirt, under a sweater or jacket.

3. A Turtleneck Sweater - a true classic item to have in your wardrobe. Like a true show piece, the turtleneck brings attention to the wearers face. And if you’re like me and can’t stand to have something scratchy on my neck, find a fabric that is soft, like cashmere.

Cashmere is made from the Kashmir goat. And contributing to the expensive nature of cashmere is the tedious and difficult task of separating the soft fibers from the long, coarse hair. The soft hair is woven or knitted into fine garments and can also be blended with silk, cotton, or wool.

If you totally can’t stand turtlenecks, than substitute the turtleneck with a mock neck. Mock necks are just as classy as turtlenecks and sometimes, depending on the trousers or skirt, can make a powerful statement about your sense of style.

The black turtleneck is the absolute classic because it creates that canvass like palette to display beautiful necklaces like pearls.

4. Speaking of pearls - pearls connote a femininity like no other piece of jewelry and they never go out of style. I wear pearl earrings everyday with everything. They have never failed me and I'm a firm believer that pearls give the wearer a sense of simplicity while looking elegant no matter what you’re wearing. Whether you’re wearing that basic long sleeved white shirt, a black turtleneck, a simple black sheath dress or a business suit, pearls look great with anything.

5. A Fitted Jacket - a tailored jacket creates waistlines, provides angles and shows off feminine curves. A great jacket is the anchor of a woman’s wardrobe. This fact alone dictates that when shopping for a fabulous jacket, take time and spend special attention to the cut, fabric and details. For me, due to my small frame, I stay away from long, double-breasted jackets with excessive detail.

I will cover more of the must have basics in your wardrobe in the next blog.

Skivious Style Suggest Purchase:
My first suggestion before you step out the door to do any shopping, decide exactly what you want to purchase or at the very least, have an idea of what you want to buy. Then decide how much money you want to spend and remember why you’re out there shopping in the first place; you’re looking for something that will make you look great. So, take time when looking for that perfect item. Oh, another important note, shop alone. This is the only way you can truly focus on you.
